In a significant step towards the revitalization and promotion of indigenous languages, Khoi and San youth will participate in a Nama language holiday workshop starting tomorrow Friday, July 18, 2025.
This initiative is part of a broader program dedicated to developing, restoring, and promoting Khoi and San languages, aligning with the South African Constitution’s mandate to elevate indigenous tongues to official language status, similar to South African Sign Language.
The workshop will be launched as part of the Nelson Mandela Day program, emphasizing community development and cultural preservation.
Mr. Lance Schultz, CEO of the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB), will address learners, community members, and interested parties tomorrow, July 18, 2025, at Gamble Street Secondary School in Kariega.
“This workshop represents a crucial effort in our ongoing commitment to ensuring that the rich linguistic heritage of the Khoi and San people is preserved, developed, and integrated into the national linguistic landscape,” said Mr. Schultz. “By empowering our youth with their ancestral languages, we are not only fulfilling a constitutional imperative but also strengthening cultural identity and pride.”
The organizers, representing the Khoi and San communities, urge media houses to cover this momentous event, which marks a vital step in language and cultural restoration.
