Professor Özlem Tastan Bishop is a professor in structural bioinformatics at Rhodes University, South Africa and a distinguished adjunct professor at Saveetha University, Chennai, India. Her research addresses health-related challenges relevant to the African continent, with a broad focus on various aspects of drug design and development.
Tastan Bishop says: “Women have been very influential in bioinformatics, even though computer science has traditionally been a male-dominated field. For example, Margaret Dayhoff helped pioneer the field well before the term “bioinformatics” appeared in the literature.”
