Dr Maurine Rofhiwa Musie is an advanced midwife specialist and senior lecturer at the University of Pretoria, recognised as the youngest PhD holder in the Department of Nursing Science and one of South Africa’s leading young scientists.
Her research and advocacy focus on sexual and reproductive health, respectful maternity care, and innovative technologies to improve maternal and newborn outcomes.
Musie says: “Traditional birth attendants and formal healthcare systems have to find ways to work together if we are to tackle inequities in maternal and neonatal health, and bridge critical gaps in care that we find in resource-limited settings. I am pioneering an innovative, tech-driven programme for Continuous Professional Development for midwifery. This focuses on obstetric emergencies and complications, ultimately reducing preventable maternal and neonatal deaths.”
