Dr Jaqueline Harvey is a researcher at the Human Sciences Research Council, specialising in the intersection of cognitive, educational, and developmental psychology, with a particular interest in applying this knowledge to enhance educational outcomes and support individual development during critical transitions.
Harvey says: “Literacy remains a pressing educational challenge in South Africa, with many learners unable to read for meaning by the fourth grade. Research highlights that instruction in the mother-tongue strengthens learning and provides a critical foundation for acquiring literacy and other skills and early transition to English-only instruction undermines academic development.”
