Patriotic Alliance (PA) Deputy President and proportional representation councillor in the City of Johannesburg, Kenny Kunene, is officially back as the City’s Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport.
Joburg Mayor Dada Morero informed Kunene of his appointment in a letter dated Friday, 3 October 2025.
“I am pleased to inform you of your appointment as MMC for Transport. The appointment will commence immediately. I look forward to your contributions as we work to build the Joburg We All Want,” Morero wrote.
“We put our anger aside and spoke like leaders,” he added. “Most importantly, I want to thank the Patriots for trusting us as leaders. We are no one’s lackeys nor do we want to control other parties. We wish to always act according to our word and what we agreed upon.”
McKenzie also revealed that discussions are still ongoing “to sort out the other provinces and regions,” adding that “sense has prevailed.”
Last week, PA threatened to withdraw from all its coalitions with the ANC across the country, including the government of national unity (GNU), unless Morero reinstated Kunene by Tuesday, 30 September.
He resigned from the position in July amid controversy over his presence at the home of alleged underworld figure and murder-accused Katiso “KT” Molefe during a police raid.
An internal party probe conducted by respected law firm Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr cleared him of wrongdoing, prompting his return as a councillor.
However, McKenzie claimed the ANC was hesitant to reinstate Kunene as MMC, pushing the PA to issue their ultimatum. The two parties held talks earlier this week to defuse tensions.
