Politically Aweh: Poll Dancing Wednesday, 21 October | Homecoming Centre, Cape Town

With the local government elections approaching, there’s plenty for South Africans to laugh about, even if some of it hurts. The Safta-winning team behind Politically Aweh is bringing its biggest live show yet to Cape Town. Poll Dancing combines stand-up comedy, satirical sketches, journalism and interviews with political figures to take on the issues shaping the election campaign.

Hosted by KG Mokgadi and Zoë Human, the show features comedians Dillan Oliphant, Dan Corder, Lindy Johnson and Yaaseen Barnes, alongside Daily Maverick journalist Naledi Mashishi, who will bring reporting and analysis from the campaign trail. There’ll also be a crash course in local government elections for anyone still trying to work out the difference between a metro and a district municipality. The jokes are sharp, but the research behind them is serious.

Working with My Vote Counts and Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Information Integrity in Africa, the team will tackle political funding and disinformation without giving any party a free pass. The show will be filmed for wider audiences, with screenings planned in all nine provinces ahead of election day.
