In a rapidly evolving world that requires innovation and the ability to solve complex problems, proficiency in mathematics and science is critical. The harsh reality, however, is that South African learners perform well below the international average in both mathematics and science assessments. According to a government gazette published in October 2023, the country continues to face a shortage of critically skilled personnel such as engineers, data scientists, climate scientists etc. The demand for STEM-trained professionals far outweighs the current capacity and supply which hinders South Africa’s economic growth and innovation capabilities.

What is the solution?

For the past 14 years youth development leader Primestars and The YouthStart Foundation, along with various other partners, have been assisting Grade 12 learners prepare for their Maths and Physical Science examinations. The eduCate: Matric Maths and Science Revision programme has and continues to make great strides, providing focused lessons countrywide, helping learners gain access to tertiary courses that require maths and science. The majority of participating learners come from non-fee-paying schools at under resourced township and rural areas.
EduCate uses a variety of different media and platforms to assist learners and make quality revision content accessible which covers the entire Math and Science CAPS curriculum accessible. A unique cinema model utilizing conventional movie theatres throughout the country, an interactive online website and in-school interventions, make this one of the most far-reaching initiatives of its kind.
The “theatres of learning” concept consists of learners being transported from their schools to cinemas where they received a popcorn and soft drink combo, learning materials and 20 hours of pre-recorded Mathematics and Physical Science revision tutorials. 10 hours for Maths and 10 hours in total for Physical Science. The cinema experience is then also taken to rural schools.
With the 2024 implementation underway, there is no doubt the beneficiaries will continue to thrive. The programme and its edutainment implementation model has proven itself to be one of the most powerful interventions of its kind. The eduCate Class of 2023 showed average improvements of 14,8% for Mathematics and 13,4% in Physical Science.
We look forward to #AchievingMoreWithTheClass Previous beneficiary statements:
“The eduCate Maths & Science programme helped me get distinctions in both subjects. The program made my final examination journey to be quite easy. This is because the program focused more on examination type questions, both complex and the basics as well. I am currently doing my first year, Bachelor of Science in Engineering, at the University of the Witwatersrand. I would advise everyone who wants to upgrade their Maths & Science marks to be part of the program.” – Asiel Matalingwane, previously from Commtech Comprehensive School in the Freestate.
“The Primestars Maths and Science programme provided me with a comprehensive review of key concepts and helped me develop effective study habits. The programme’s focus on practical applications and problem-solving strategies boosted my confidence and enhanced my understanding of complex subjects. As a result, I was well-prepared for my final exams and achieved success by being a top achiever in my school. Now, as I pursue my BSC in Microbiology degree at the University of Pretoria, I can attest to the programme’s significant impact on my academic journey.” – Thandolwethu Mangena, a former matriculant at Dawnview High School in Gauteng.
This programme completely transformed my learning experience, making it not only exciting and enjoyable but also remarkably effective. One of the most unique aspects of this program was the opportunity to learn in a cinema setting, which made the whole process of acquiring knowledge truly memorable and fun. Thanks to Primestars, my understanding of Math and Physical Sciences was greatly enhanced. The learning materials I received were invaluable in helping me achieve a distinction in Physical Sciences. It’s safe to say that this success played a significant role in paving the way for me to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Witwatersrand.”- Pfanani Kevin Maphula, Leshata Secondary School, Orange Farm Gauteng. Executive Statements:
“To the Class of 2024, you can be proud of yourselves for reaching this pivotal moment in your educational journey. As you navigate the uncertainties of the future, know that your families, teachers, community, and this programme is behind you. Reach out for guidance, seek advice, and lean on the support around you. The road ahead may not always be smooth but have faith in your abilities, remain resilient and finish strong. “– Martin Sweet, Primestars Managing Director. “Reaching this 14-year milestone with the Educate programme is more than just a milestone- it is a testament to the transformative power of education. Our shared commitment to #AchievingMoreWithTheClassOf24 is stronger than ever, and their greatness starts now!!!! Our impact is measured not only by improved exam results but by the brighter futures we help create. Each learner’s success story is a step
towards a more prosperous South Africa.” – Nkosinathi Moshoana, Primestars Chief Operating Officer and Executive Lead for the eduCate programme.
