Roula is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Pretoria, holds the Bilateral South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) Chair in Just Energy Transitions, and is the vice president of the International Association for Energy Economics and the founding president of the South African Association for Energy Economics.
Her research focuses on energy and environmental economics, macroeconomic policy, and the socio-economic implications of the energy transition.
Roula says: “One of the most pressing macroeconomic challenges South Africa currently faces is the persistent lack of inclusive economic growth. High unemployment, especially among youth and women, remains deeply concerning.
“From my research in energy economics and the just energy transition, it’s clear that public finance and budget decisions must be aligned with long-term sustainability goals. This includes targeted investment in energy transitions that not only decarbonise the economy but also create jobs and reduce inequality.”
