The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has expressed deep outrage following the brutal killing of two detectives in Roodepoort.
The officers were allegedly shot and killed by suspect Jabulani Moyo, an awaiting trial prisoner, while being transported from court to the Boksburg Correctional Facility on Friday, 8 August 2025.
The Committee views this heinous act not only as an attack on our law enforcement officers, but also a direct assault on the rule of law and the safety of our communities.
The Committee calls on the South African Police Service (SAPS) and all relevant law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively in apprehending the suspect. No one should be allowed to evade justice after committing such a despicable crime.
The murder of police officers, who are entrusted with the critical responsibility of protecting our citizens, must be met with the full might of the law.
The Committee demands that the suspect be hunted down, arrested, and made an example of to send a clear message that such violence will not be tolerated.
Furthermore, the Committee calls on government to strengthen mechanisms that ensure the safety of police officers and create a conducive working environment for them. Police officers must be empowered and supported in their duties, including being allowed to use necessary force when their lives are in imminent danger.
Additionally, the Committee urges members of the public to assist law enforcement by providing any information that could lead to the arrest of Jabulani Moyo. Community cooperation is vital in ensuring that criminals are brought to justice.
The Committee extends its deepest condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the fallen officers and reaffirms its commitment to supporting measures that enhance the protection of law enforcement personnel.
