Afrika Tikkun

From 3 November to 3 December, South Africa observes National Disability Rights Awareness Month, a time dedicated to recognising the rights, inclusion and well-being of persons living with disabilities. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of building an accessible, supportive society where everyone can thrive, regardless of ability.

As Nelson Mandela once said, “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.” These words continue to guide our collective work toward equality, dignity, and empowerment for all.

In this spirit, the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s ‘Making Reading Fun’ programme is proud to partner with Afrika Tikkun in support of Disability Awareness Month, under the theme: “Disability Awareness through Creative Engagement and Inclusion.”

The Foundation’s long-standing partnership with Afrika Tikkun, rooted in Mandela Day collaborations and a shared vision for nurturing young minds continues to grow through initiatives that champion inclusion and belonging.

From 17 to 24 November, the Making Reading Fun programme will join Afrika Tikkun in a series of engaging sessions with children with disabilities, featuring readings from Long Walk to Freedom (Children’s Edition) and interactive storytelling that inspires joy and connection.

The campaign will also include the Ability Fun Walk a celebration of inclusion, unity, and empowerment bringing together Bambanani ECD Centres, Disability Inclusion beneficiaries, and the Afrika Tikkun team to promote visibility and shared participation.

Through this collaboration, Afrika Tikkun proudly supports and advances the mission of disability inclusion, ensuring that children and young people of all abilities are seen, supported and given the opportunity to thrive.

Together, we honour Madiba’s legacy and reaffirm our commitment to a South Africa built on accessibility, dignity and opportunity for all.
