Allison Geduld says: “South Africa has a commendable Constitution and legislation that both promote equality and the rights of sexual minorities. However, the implementation of these laws has been inconsistent. There have been various incidents of LGBTQIA+ people facing discrimination and social marginalisation.
“Furthermore, the acronym LGBTQIA+ encompasses those with diverse needs and experiences. Legislation should reflect the diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community. An intersectional approach is needed that works towards enhancing the capabilities of LGBTQIA+ people.”
