By Nyx McLean
Nyx McLean is a transdisciplinary researcher and activist focused on LGBTQIA+ rights, inclusion, and digital safety, with work centred on how queer and trans communities navigate and shape digital spaces.
They have led global research projects such as the Feminist Internet Research Network, addressing technology-facilitated gender-based violence and advocating for inclusive digital policy. They consult on gender and sexual diversity in education and policy.
McLean says: “There has certainly been progress in terms of visibility, especially within urban spaces and among younger generations. We’ve seen more public celebrations of Pride, increased online representation, and growing recognition of LGBTQIA+ identities in some educational and corporate contexts.
“However, visibility does not always translate into inclusion or safety – particularly for Black, trans, and gender-diverse people outside major cities. Much of my academic work focuses on how queer and trans people are using digital technologies to create alternative publics and spaces of belonging. These platforms have helped push conversations forward and connect communities, but we must not mistake digital inclusion for structural change.
“True inclusion requires the transformation of systems – education, healthcare, law enforcement – not just symbolic gestures.”
