Dr Natasha Ross is a National Research Foundation-rated scientist and senior lecturer in chemistry at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). As a leading researcher within UWC’s SensorLab, she specialises in developing advanced nanostructured materials to enhance the efficiency and affordability of renewable energy storage systems.
Dr Ross also actively engages in science outreach programmes, both aimed at increasing student enrolment and retention in the sciences.
Natasha says: “Gender disparities persist, particularly in high-growth sectors like STEM. Shockingly, only 13% of STEM graduates in South Africa are women, compared to the global average of 35%. In the tech sector, women occupy just 23% of ICT roles. Societal norms around caregiving and domestic responsibilities only deepen the divide.”
