Professor Omowunmi Isafiade is an NRF-rated computer scientist and research leader with many years of collaborative research and supervision experience.
Her work has garnered her considerable local and international recognition, such as the prestigious L’Oreal-UNESCO for Women in Science, the NRF Research Excellence Award, Google Anita Borg (Women Techmakers), and a Meta grant.
Her research includes applications of technologies like AI in areas like public safety, agriculture and healthcare. She advocates helping to remove barriers that keep women and less privileged people from entering and/or thriving in STEM.
Isafiade says: “More than just achieving gender parity, women are making strides in emerging technologies by using innovation and ethics to break barriers and lead initiatives that are shaping our world today. However, more still needs to be done. What will help is science communication, community engagement, mentorship, and capacity building for early-career women scientists.”
