Ronel Koekemoer has worked with survivors of sexual and gender-based violence for over nine years in her capacity as a counsellor, researcher and activist.
Ronel says:
‘Survivors are human beings with complex histories, contradictions and agency. Yet, certain narratives around sexual violence are still privileged — typically those that align with patriarchal, classist and often racist ideas of who is ‘worthy’ of belief or protection. This marginalises survivors who don’t fit the mould. Sexual violence is not a hierarchy, it exists on a spectrum.’
