A leading expert in social franchising, she has led global initiatives, including the world’s first Social Franchise Accelerator, and advises locally and internationally.
Anita says: “There has been a lack of women-focused development initiatives, but the tide seems to be turning. From local banks starting incubators and other development initiatives aimed at women to industry-specific initiatives such as Women In Franchising Africa (WIFA), focused initiatives could contribute to awareness and education to foster women-led businesses.
“SMEs are certainly having a difficult time with aspects such as cash flow and a challenging environment, but they have the flexibility to implement changes quickly. As an entrepreneur, you should always be thinking of your next move and how to maximise your resources.
“Entrepreneurship offers flexibility and freedom and will continue to be a good option in South Africa as corporate employment is not the haven it used to be. SMEs are the primary sources of job creation with over 60% of employed persons working for SMEs, therefore playing a critical role in the economy.”
