Registration
The IEC held its second and final voter registration weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
We need to analyse the numbers, but the IEC was upbeat. Chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo said there were 291,806 new registrations and 1,502,245 updates. Of the new registrations, 26% were aged between 16 and 29.
Since the 2024 general elections, 2.1 million voters have been added to the voters’ roll, with 884,000 removed (largely because of deaths).
Cogta Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has announced the elections will be proclaimed on Friday, which is when the voters’ roll will officially close.
You have until midnight on Friday, 7 August, to get it sorted. Don’t wait. Do it now.
