After the Heritage Day braais at Loftus Versfeld, 500 greasy grids presented a cleaning challenge on a very South African scale.

Heritage Day saw South Africans come together at Loftus Versfeld for the World’s Biggest Braai, celebrating community, culture and one of the country’s most-loved traditions.

But once the fires had cooled and the braais were over, there was another sizeable challenge waiting: 500 greasy braai grids that needed cleaning. Sunlight Ultra Power stepped in to take on the post-braai clean-up, putting its 5X grease-cutting power to the test in a large-scale live demonstration. The challenge? To see what could be achieved using cold water and just one 750ml bottle of Sunlight Ultra Power. The result: all 500 used braai grids were cleaned. 500 grids, one bottle

Fifty Wash Stations were set up at the event, with each station responsible for cleaning 10 used braai grids. Each basin contained cold water and just 15ml of Sunlight Ultra Power. After 15 seconds to build up the foam, all 50 stations began tackling the grease-covered grids simultaneously. The numbers told the story: 50 stations using 15ml each added up to just 750ml – the equivalent of a single bottle of Sunlight Ultra Power – to clean all 500 grids. In less than 11minutes, the challenge was complete.

Influencers and content creators attending the activation moved between the stations to experience the results first-hand, comparing the grids before and after washing. Because braai grids are naturally dark, the difference was not only visible but could be felt, as the grease and residues were removed from the surfaces. The 500 freshly washed grids were then brought together in a collective display, creating a striking representation of the activation’s message: “500 grids, one powerful clean.”

“South Africans love a braai, but cleaning up afterwards is probably the part we could all happily do without,” says Caroline Blumrick, Senior Marketing Manager for Sunlight at Unilever. “We wanted to demonstrate Sunlight Ultra Power’s cleaning performance in a way that felt relevant, memorable and uniquely South African. Putting it to the test on 500 greasy braai grids, using cold water, gave us the perfect opportunity to do exactly that.”

Putting cleaning power to a real-life test rather than demonstrating the product under controlled conditions, Sunlight put its cleaning power to work in a real-life Heritage Day setting, tackling the grease left behind after hundreds of braais.

The activation showcased Sunlight Ultra Power’s 5X grease-cutting power, with the use of cold water adding another dimension to the challenge. The demonstration took place in full view of eventgoers, influencers and content creators, allowing them to see (and feel) the results for themselves.

Creators including Denzhe Makungo (Black Venda Man), Xolile Vesile, Sinoyolo Sifo (Sifo The Cooking Husband), Jana Jooste and Rynhardt Schoeman (Janey and Waney) attended and have since shared content from the activation with their online communities, with Robyn Mentor also part of the Heritage Day experience.

“Heritage Day is about enjoying the food, the people and the moments that bring us together. If we can make dealing with the mess afterwards quicker and easier, there’s more time to focus on what really matters,” Blumrick added.

Throughout Heritage Month, Sunlight has encouraged South Africans to embrace the experiences, and the inevitable dirty dishes, that come from cooking and sharing food together, through #SunlightDirtyDishCount and #CookOutsideYourCulture. The Heritage Day activation took that idea to a much bigger scale, demonstrating that even the mess left behind after hundreds of braais could be tackled.

And after a day built around one of South Africa’s favourite traditions, the result told its own story: One Heritage Day. One750ml bottle of Sunlight Ultra Power. 50 Wash Stations.

A proudly South African demonstration that when it comes to cutting through grease, a little Sunlight Ultra Power goes a long way.
