The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements is pleased to announce the allocation of an additional R109 million by Gauteng Treasury as announced in the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement this week, to fund the Interim Sanitation Programme. This funding is part of a broader initiative aimed at addressing sanitation challenges faced by many communities in Gauteng, particularly in informal settlements and under-resourced areas.
The Interim Sanitation Programme was established to provide immediate relief to communities lacking adequate sanitation facilities. This initiative is crucial in promoting health and hygiene, especially in densely populated areas where access to basic services is limited. The programme includes the installation of temporary sanitation solutions, such as portable toilets and communal facilities, ensuring that residents have access to safe and dignified sanitation options.
The additional funding will enhance the capacity of the Department to implement these solutions effectively, addressing urgent needs while longer-term infrastructure projects are developed. This commitment reflects the Gauteng Provincial Government’s dedication to improving living conditions and promoting public health across the province.
MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, stated, “This funding is a significant step towards ensuring that all residents of Gauteng have access to basic sanitation services. We recognise that adequate sanitation is not just a matter of convenience; it is a fundamental human right that impacts health, dignity, and overall quality of life.”
This additional funding is a vital resource in our ongoing efforts to enhance service delivery and improve the living conditions of our communities. We remain committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that those Gauteng residents most in need have access to essential services.
