It’s time for a workshop! I’m still waiting for accreditation for some workshops but for now I’d like to start addressing some of the tricky issues that keep coming up in shorter more cost-conscious workshops.
I’ll be running a workshop on ‘Children & Sexual Stuff.
Understanding and Managing Sexual Play Amongst Children: Peers and Siblings’. This is an important topic that I’m sure you have encountered at some stage in your time or work with children.
Sexual play among children is not uncommon and can create a great amount of anxiety for parents and teachers. We are often left asking questions such as: ‘’Should a 4-year-old be playing sexual games?” Is it normal for an 8-year-old to be playing doctor-doctor with his friend?”, ‘My 6-year-old keeps fiddling with his willy, is this normal?’’ or ‘’When should my son and daughter stop bathing together?”.
Although sexual behaviours in children can be healthy and a normal part of childhood development there can be times when it is inappropriate and potentially problematic. It is vitally important that the concerning behaviour be handled timeously and with sensitivity. Adults’ reactions to such situations can either assist the child in resolving a struggle they may be having or shame and humiliate them, leading to possible psychological problems later on.
It’s useful for those caring for children to have an understanding of:
What is and isn’t normal sexual behaviour in children?
What should children know about sex during the various developmental
stages?
What are RED FLAGS to watch out for?
Managing inappropriate sexual play at school and at home?
Helping children understand boundaries and body safety.
