The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements is pleased to announce the successful outcomes of recent engagements with the South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) and the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP). These meetings are pivotal in our ongoing commitment to enhance service delivery in human settlements across the province.

During our discussions, we collectively recognised the pressing need for collaboration in areas such as training, research, and innovation. The Department is committed to ensuring that construction projects are completed on time and within budget, addressing the critical challenges we face in delivering quality human settlements. By partnering with SACPCMP and SACAP, we aim to leverage their expertise in regulating professionals within the construction and architectural sectors, thereby enhancing compliance with industry standards.

The engagement with SACPCMP focused on establishing frameworks that will ensure all stakeholders involved in infrastructural development are competent and registered professionals. This aligns with SACPCMP’s mandate to protect the public by maintaining a national register of professionals who adhere to a strict Code of Conduct. We believe that by fostering these partnerships, we can significantly improve the quality of human settlements delivered in Gauteng.

In our meeting with SACAP, we explored potential collaborations aimed at developing climate-resilient infrastructure. Recognising that any infrastructural project lacking registered architectural oversight is deemed a criminal offense, it is imperative that we work closely with SACAP to ensure compliance and competence among professionals involved.

Our discussions also touched on improving procurement processes for technical services and utilising academic research findings to inform best practices within the built environment. The Department under the leadership of MEC Tasneem Motara remains committed to these collaborative efforts as we strive to overcome existing challenges in human settlements delivery.

We are optimistic that these partnerships will yield significant improvements in our service delivery mechanisms, ultimately benefiting the communities we serve. The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements looks forward to implementing the agreed-upon initiatives from these engagements and will keep stakeholders informed of our progress as we work together towards sustainable development in our province.
