The Statistician-General of South Africa and Head of Statistics South Africa, Risenga Maluleke, handed over the Census 2022 results to Premier Andrek Panyaza Lesufi.
Gauteng (GP) is the most populated province in with 15,1 million people. The GP population increased by 23% from 2011 to 2022. City of Johannesburg is the number 1 ranked population centre.
At 84,6% the Black African population group constitutes the largest proportion of GP’s population, followed by White (10%) and Coloured (2,9%). With a sex ratio of 102, Gauteng is the only province with more males than females.
Between 2011 and 2022 GP gained a net amount of almost 400 000 persons moving from other provinces. Strongest migration flows from LP were to the GP, while the biggest stream out of GP was to WC.
More than 3 out of 5 children aged 0-4 years in Gauteng had access to some form of early childhood development (ECD) program. Persons aged 5–24 years attending school increased by 2,5 percentage points from 66,8% in 2001 to 69,3% in 2022.
