Have we turned our backs on our roots?

By Tracey Ndlovu
It is common knowledge that the elderly strongly feel that young people don’t respect and want to know about their origins and cultures. Some even go further to say that ‘our gods and ancestors’ do not approve.
In my opinion, young people are lazy, unfocussed and have no ambition and set goals. As young people we are happy with attending parties and going to clubs. We have lost respect even at our own homes. Culture and tradition seems to mean nothing as we want to explore the city life more.
If you ask me, I do not know anything about my culture and traditions. Ever since I moved to Johannesburg, I have never looked back or cared about where my roots are and where do I come from? This is a shame if you ask me, I am not proud.
We spend most of the time on social networks and these social networks have taken over our lives and that is where we learning our culture from. The only culture and traditions we know are those from social networks.
This is very worrisome and I want to plead with the learners in our school that we all need to find our roots – the first place to find answers is at home, let’s ask our parents where we come from TODAY!
