Parliament congratulates Her Majesty Nkosikazi Nomandla Dorothy Mhlauli of the amaRharhabe Kingdom on her election as the Chairperson of the National House of Traditional Leaders. Nkosikazi Mhlauli, who previously served as the Deputy Chairperson, was elected unopposed on Tuesday, 25 January.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa Nqakula, and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Amos Masondo, expressed their most profound sense of pleasure at the news of her election. “We congratulate Her Majesty Nkosikazi Mhlauli on her historic election and wish her well in the cause of fulfilling her leadership responsibilities over this important institution of our constitutional democracy”, said the Presiding Officers.
The Presiding Officers said her election is indicative of the institution’s transformative and progressive approach to leadership. “We are pleased that the National House of Traditional Leaders is breaking the perceived conservative stereotypical boundaries of patriarchy, yet preserving key tenets of the customary value system”, they said.
Nkosikazi Mhlauli takes over after the sad passing of Inkosi Sipho Etwell Mahlangu in 2020. She is the first female Traditional Leader ever to chair the institution in South Africa.
Parliament extends its heartfelt congratulations and wishes her well in her new role and responsibility.
