By SADAG
Mental Health issues can feel isolating, but no one should have to face the journey alone. SADAG’s free Support Groups provide safe spaces where people can connect, share their experiences, and find strength in community through shared understanding.
SADAG is excited to announce the launch of our Support Group Leader Training starting on the 18th of June 2025.
We are expanding our network and inviting passionate people to take part in our Support Group Leader Training, which includes a free 6-part online webinar series designed to equip new Leaders with the tools and guidance to launch and run their own Support Groups
Why become a Support Group Leader?
“Mental Health struggles can be isolating. Support Groups connect you with others who understand what you’re going through, which helps reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation.” says Support Group Leader Sanele Vilakazi, who runs an online Postpartum Depression Group. By leading a Group, you’re not just facilitating discussions, you’re helping others feel seen and supported while building a powerful network of healing and understanding.
Support Groups are not therapy, but they offer something just as valuable. They provide a trusted space where people can express themselves without judgment, gain perspective, and build resilience.
Who Should Start a Support Group?
Are you passionate about Mental Health and making a difference in your community? Becoming a SADAG Mental Health Support Group Leader might be the perfect role for you.
We’re looking for people who have personal experience with Mental Health challenges—either through their own journey or by supporting a family member or loved one; people who understand the value of connection and shared experiences.
This opportunity is ideal for those who see a lack of Mental Health support in their community and want to create safe spaces where others can feel heard, understood, and empowered. Whether you’re hoping to start a Group at your local clinic, hospital, church, or community centre, or simply want to bring people together who’ve faced similar Mental Health challenges, SADAG will guide and support you every step of the way.
What You’ll Learn in the Training:
This six-part online training series takes place weekly on Wednesdays from 18 June to 23 July 2025 at 10am -11am, covering:
What a Support Group is and who should join or start one
Training and preparing to become a volunteer Support Group Leader
Steps to launch and sustain your Support Group
Practical exercises and assessments to ensure confidence in leading
Each session offers hands-on learning, giving future Leaders a clear pathway to creating safe, impactful spaces for their communities.
Support Group Leader from KZN, Di Kendal who runs an Anxiety and Depression Group, and a Pet Bereavement Group, says “I have seen Members grow and improve their Mental Health. One of my past Members stopped by to thank me for holding space for her. She shared that the Group had a huge impact on her life when she really needed it.”
A Community of Support & Growth:
By joining the SADAG network of Support Group Leaders, you become part of a movement that prioritises compassion, resilience, and Mental Health advocacy.
Denise Greeves, SADAG Chronic Illness and Mental Health Support Group Leader in Newlands East, says that “Being understood when nobody understands you is priceless.”
