#JusticeForCwecwe, which took over social media this past weekend. A 7-year-old girl was allegedly raped at her school – one of the very places meant to keep children safe. Her family, and thousands of people across South Africa are demanding answers and justice. Amnesty International South Africa is standing with them.
This case is not just about one child – it reflects a deeper crisis. Schools should be spaces of learning, not of fear and harm. Yet, time and again, we see a justice system that moves too slowly, that allows perpetrators to evade accountability, and that fails survivors and their families. This cannot continue.
What We Know So Far:
Government’s Response: The Department of Education has deregistered Bergview College, acknowledging its failure to protect its students. However, the school’s board is now challenging this in court.
The investigation: Despite the case being opened with the police in October 2024, there are still too many unanswered questions. After months of refusal, the school’s principal has finally submitted a DNA sample as part of the investigation. But justice is still far from being served.
Amnesty International South Africa is demanding a thorough, transparent, and swift investigation. We also recognise that gender-based violence is deeply rooted in social and cultural norms that must be challenged – which is why we want to hear from you. Take our short survey to help shape our gender-based violence advocacy.

No child should have to endure what the young girl has gone through. No family should have to fight this hard for justice. Together, let’s keep fighting until she and her family see justice.
In hope,
Amnesty International South Africa
