With local government elections expected to take place between November 2026 and January 2027, Tsakani Maluleke, the Auditor General, has urged South Africans to register to vote, but also to keep the bigger picture in mind.
“As we head towards the next local government elections, it’s another opportunity for us to reset how we think about the capacitation of local governments, the professionalisation of local government and what we insist upon in terms of the quality of leaders that are ultimately appointed to take on key decision making roles and in driving the development agenda,” says Maluleke.
“Local government is too important for us to look away. It’s too important for us not to vote. We all must vote and exercise our rights. But importantly, we must make sure that the people that are ultimately put in those leadership positions are up to the task of running these very important institutions for the benefit of all of us,” she adds.Â
