But right now, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tackle plastic pollution on a global scale! In just a few days, African and global leaders are recommencing United Nations negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty — an agreement that, if ambitious enough, could dramatically reduce plastic production and force Big Brands to transition to systems of reuse and refill. Not only is 99% of plastic made from oil and gas — fueling the climate crisis, but single-use plastic is harmful throughout its entire lifecycle. It exposes people who live on the frontlines of fracking sites, next to incinerators, or in highly polluted regions, like the Global South, to a range of harmful chemical pollutants. Despite the damaging impacts of single-use plastics, Big Brands and the petrochemical industry want to keep making more!
