By Lerato Tsotetsi We are living in a plastic pollution crisis. Plastic pollution is flooding our planet, harming people’s health, accelerating social injustice, destroying biodiversity, and fueling the climate crisis. But right now, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tackle plastic pollution on a global scale! In just a few days, African and global leaders are recommencing United Nations negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty — an agreement that, if ambitious enough, could dramatically reduce plastic production and force Big Brands to transition to systems of reuse and refill. Will you help grow the movement even bigger by watching and sharing our video calling for a strong and ambitious Global Plastics Treaty? It’s urgent that world leaders get this treaty right! Not only is 99% of plastic made from oil and gas — fueling the climate crisis, but single-use plastic is harmful throughout its entire lifecycle. It exposes people who live on the frontlines of fracking sites, next to incinerators, or in highly polluted regions, like the Global South, to a range of harmful chemical pollutants. Despite the damaging impacts of single-use plastics, Big Brands and the petrochemical industry want to keep making more! That’s why securing a strong and ambitious treaty is critical, but it’s going to be a long, hard challenge. Industry will certainly try to weaken the ambition of the treaty. Plastic is big money, and their future depends on pumping out more and more of it. But with people power and an unstoppable global movement, we can win! More than 1.1 million people around the world have already signed the petition to world leaders — asking for a strong Global Plastics Treaty. Will you help amp up the pressure during this crucial moment? We demand a treaty that keeps oil and gas used to produce plastic in the ground, stops big polluters with their relentless plastic production, and ensures a just transition to a reuse-based economy that centers the interests of communities most affected. We need an ambitious Global Plastics Treaty to turn off the plastics tap and, finally, end the age of plastic — our community, climate, and planet’s future depend on it! The time for action is now. |
