Earlier yesterday, Grahamstown High Court in Makhanda, South Africa, ordered Shell to immediately cease its seismic blasting along South Africa’s Wild Coast. This interdict is a crucial victory for affected communities. It gives us hope that protecting our natural world is possible, even when we are up against a giant like Shell!
What’s next? A court will need to determine whether or not Shell requires an environmental authorisation obtained under the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA). There is also always the possibility that Shell appeal’s the interim interdict, but it will not suspend the order at this stage.

As we shut down for the year, I am hopeful and grateful. Hopeful for impactful victories that progress environmental protection and louder African voices calling for environmental justice. I feel gratitude for every brave person, community and organisation who has taken a stand against greedy corporations and corrupt governments.
We can create a safe, healthy and just planet only when we work together.
Thank you for continuing your journey with us.
Best wishes to you and your loved ones for a happy and healthy start to 2022! |
