It is important to develop an understanding of the skills required in business and to change the mind-sets of residents, particularly the unemployed youth. It is important to encourage the youth through examples to aspire and pursue their own paths, to further developing their own skills to earn a living, be better citizens and FUTURE Leaders!
I recently spoke to Philiswa Shongwe of NAMASTE SPA that opened its doors on 4 March 2024.
The name, how did that come about?
Namaste is a Japanese prayer meaning the divine in me honours the divine in you. The Japanese also use it for thank you and go well; I love it!
Tell us about your early life (school, any further education or professional qualification to your role today)
I did my high school at St. Michaels High School. I then went to do my Aesthetics Degree at Jill Farqharson.
What does your role mean to you?
It means providing a memorable experience to everyone I come into contact with.
What are the most critical resources for your successful leadership?
I am a good listener; I have empathy and I am a great judge of character.
What can we expect from you going forward?
It has only been a month; but I believe we have a long way to go and we are eager to set new trends, we strive for perfection but most importantly, we give an unforgettable experience, living you yearning for more.
What are your words of advice for young people, particularly women to start small businesses?
Believe in your dream and know you are capable, it’s scary yes; but the satisfaction of knowing you are growing a new baby and you are responsible for its survival is so rewarding. I’m looking forward to this journey, every day is a new day full of new opportunities.
What are your thoughts on Covid-19 in terms of small businesses, what measures should businesses owners to protect their businesses?
COVID-19 was really hard, but I am happy with the strides taken to control it. I think businesses have a better chance of survival now than when it first hit, our duty now is to take all precautions to prevent it rippling us again, using all the knowledge we have about this pandemic and control it from controlling our livelihood.
What is the legacy that you would want to leave when you retire?
I want to leave generational wealth, and train my kids, so that their kids find this business well and strong.
How does your business contribute to the community?
I have employed two ladies; I’m training them to be able to have skills they can use in future to better themselves too.
What have been your highs and lows of your working career?
Never having enough money to start my own business because this is a skill you have to empower yourself, I kept relying on people to employ me and pay me for my skill, but not anymore.
When you not at work, what do you get up to, and where can people follow you or your business online?
I love reading and learning new innovative ways to better my skill.
