The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety will on Friday, 28 February 2025, conduct an oversight visit to the Sunnyside Police Station in Tshwane.
This visit forms part of the Committee’s ongoing efforts to address the performance and operational challenges faced by police stations across the province, particularly those identified as underperforming.
Sunnyside Police Station is one of the 40 police stations in Gauteng identified poor performing.
The station serves an area with a high concentration of higher education institutions, where a significant number of students reside. The area is also known for its vibrant nightlife, with numerous clubs and taverns contributing to a high crime rate.
The Committee is deeply concerned about the escalating levels of violent crime, including the high murder rate, prevalence of drugs, sexual assaults, and human trafficking in the area.
The oversight visit aims to identify problematic issues affecting service delivery at the station and to recommend actionable measures to improve safety and security in the area.
This also forms part of the Committee’s ongoing efforts to ensuring that law enforcement agencies are adequately equipped and supported to protect communities and combat crime effectively.
Details of the visit are as follows:
