The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s (GPL) Standing Committee on Scrutiny of Subordinate Legislation (CSSL), under the leadership of Chairperson Honourable Matshidiso Mfikoe, will convene a meeting with the Department of Roads and Transport on Thursday, 13 March 2025. The meeting will take place at 10h00 in Committee Room B of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
The primary agenda of the meeting is to deliberate on the Eighteenth Amendment of the Gauteng Road Traffic Regulations, 2001, specifically focusing on the proposed adjustments of Schedule 2, which pertains to vehicle registration and licensing fees.
The meeting will also receive presentations on the Socio-Economic Analysis and Legal Opinion, as provided by the GPL, on the Gauteng Traffic Amendment Regulations 2025.
The proposed amendments seek to increase fees by an average of 5.5% to 6%, consistent with previous annual adjustments. These adjustments are critical to bolstering the fiscal capacity of the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG), enabling the delivery of essential services to the province’s residents. As the most populous province in South Africa, Gauteng relies on these revenue streams to maintain and improve its infrastructure and service delivery.
In accordance with the Roads and Transport Act of 1997, the Department of Roads and Transport is mandated to review and amend fees annually to ensure sustainable revenue generation for the province. The proposed tariff adjustments are designed to align with this mandate while supporting the GPG’s commitment to providing quality services to its citizens.
