Gibson Nzimande’s remarkable journey is a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the transformative power of education. On Thursday, 19 October 2023, the resilient young man was among UJ’s graduating class, receiving his master’s degree in history.
In 2018, he found himself working as a waste reclaimer, seeking to make ends meet while facing the challenges of life on the streets.
A dream kept him alive during those difficult times – a dream of pursuing higher education. As recently as last year, Nzimande slept under a tree on Rivonia Road. His few possessions included a bucket, a small piece of soap, and his Honours degree certificate and MA proposal.
However, in April 2022, UJ academics learned of Nzimande’s extraordinary situation and rallied to support him. A fund was created to assist him with generous donations from corporate partners and compassionate South Africans. This outpouring of support transformed his life and provided the opportunity for him to further his education.
Nzimande shared his excitement about his pending graduation:
“As I reflect on my journey, I couldn’t be more satisfied in the direction that this is taking. From a homeless person to a graduate of a prestigious University such as UJ. I am pleased that I get to live in this moment. It shows that the effort I put in, trying to make ends meet, was all worth it. I have finally finished this degree. I can now see the direction of my life, and the realisation of a childhood dream and I look forward to pursuing my studies further at UJ.”
