The Gauteng Portfolio Committee of Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation mourns the tragic passing of Dr Gomolemo Mokae, a renowned author, freedom struggle veteran and a community builder.
The gruesome death of the late Dr Mokae has once again reminded us of the ever presence of heartless marauding criminals who terrorise our communities and rob them of their loved ones including those who fought for the democratic dispensation we now enjoy.
Dr Mokae, was no ordinary person given his contribution to our liberation struggle against Apartheid, mentoring young writers and chose to operate his medical practice first in Soweto and later in Ga-Rankuwa.
The world of arts has lost a stalwart and literary giant who produced famous works that adorned our television screens and seminal books that won both local and international accolades.
His book Masego was prescribed for grade 12 learners in South Africa, proving his valuable contribution to culture and preservation of the Setswana language.
We join the people of Ga-Rankuwa (Tshwane), Gauteng and South Africa in celebrating a life well lived. Those who sought to silence him may have not known that his legacy will continue to inspire millions even beyond his grave.
We call on law-enforcement agencies to bring those who committed this gruesome murder to book.
