Background
Civil society organisations, climate justice advocates, policymakers, researchers, journalists, and the public are invited to attend the virtual launch of Regaining the Currents: Indigenous Women’s Ecofeminist Visions for a Just Energy Transition in Africa, a groundbreaking new publication by Dr Melania Chiponda, a prominent Zimbabwean scholar and human rights defender, feminist activist, and energy justice advocate.
The event will also feature a documentary screening and reflections from climate justice leaders and advocates working at the intersection of gender justice, Indigenous knowledge systems, energy access, and environmental sustainability.
The book explores how Indigenous African women are shaping alternative visions for a just energy transition rooted in care, community authority, ecological stewardship, and resistance to extractive economic systems. It challenges dominant narratives around “green development” and highlights the lived realities of communities affected by mining, energy poverty, land dispossession, and climate injustice.
WHY THIS EVENT MATTERS
As Africa and the world accelerate efforts toward renewable energy transitions, the event seeks to elevate critical conversations around justice, equity, Indigenous rights, and feminist alternatives to extractive development models.
Participants will gain insights into:
- Indigenous women’s leadership in climate justice movements
- Ecofeminist perspectives on energy transitions in Africa
- The impacts of green extractivism and critical mineral mining
- Community-centred alternatives for sustainable energy futures
- The role of storytelling and lived experiences in shaping policy and advocacy
ABOUT THE BOOK
Regaining the Currents is a timely contribution to ongoing debates on climate justice, decolonisation, and sustainable development in Africa. Through research, storytelling, and political analysis, the book centres Indigenous women’s voices and proposes transformative pathways toward equitable and regenerative energy futures.
