| South Africa continues to experience recurring waves of xenophobic rhetoric, anti-migrant disinformation, online hate speech and harmful stereotypes targeting migrants, refugees and foreign nationals. These narratives often intensify during election periods, when political contestation, economic anxieties and identity-based mobilisation heighten social tensions and create fertile ground for misinformation, scapegoating and violence. As the world commemorates the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, there is growing recognition of the important role media and digital platforms play in either amplifying or countering harmful narratives. This event aims to help strengthen responsible, ethical and conflict-sensitive reporting practices among South African newsrooms, as well as solicit the views of critical stakeholders on how to combat hate speech. All while commemorating the International Day for Countering Hate Speech by creating a space for reflection, dialogue and practical learning on the role of media in either reinforcing or countering hate, discrimination and social division.
